“Judy Blume + Carpenters = Amazingpants” – Los Angeles Magazine

“Are You There God? It’s Me, Karen Carpenter” – the musical mashup parody that originally rocked Los Angeles in 2012 is returning for a one-night-only livestream including commentary from the original cast as well as clips from the SRO productions at the Attic Theatre, The Cavern Club Celebrity Theater, the Hudson Theatre Mainstage, Palm Canyon Theater (Palm Springs) and the StageRight Theatre (Seattle).

Loosely based on Judy Blume’s popular coming of age novel published in 1970, this musical parody lovingly recalls the sights, sentiments and sounds of the era with such songs from the Carpenters catalog as Rainy Days and Mondays, Close to You, Top of the World and We’ve Only Just Begun.

Come watch Margaret as she moves to New Jersey, falls in love with the boy next door, enters sixth grade, joins an all-girl group, obsesses about bras and sanitary belts and (finally!) becomes a woman – all while singing the hits of the Carpenters!

Conceived, written and directed by Dane Whitlock with choreography by Kim Hale and Joseph Corella, “Are You There God? It’s Me, Karen Carpenter” features Drew Droege, Carey Peters and Jennifer Blake. Rounding out the ensemble of this not to be missed theatrical event are Amy Procacci, Libby Baker, Rae Dawn Hadinger, Joe Donohoe, Brad Griffith and Matthew Herrmann. The original productions were produced by Joe Chianese and Vickie Mendoza.
